10 REASONS YOU'RE NOT AS LEAN AS YOU SHOULD BE!
It's been my job for the past 6 years to play the role of fat loss detective in what seems like a series of constant evolving mysteries that differ from person to person. With determination, investigation and experimentation I will usually pin point why someone has trouble leaning out... Here are 10 REASONS YOU'RE NOT AS LEAN AS YOU SHOULD BE!
1. You don't sleep well!
-Lack of sleep not only affects mental performance, slows your recovery, boosts inflammation and it makes it difficult to get lean.
2. You don't eat enough!
-Want a slow metabolism? 5 Almonds, a bowl of fruit and some yogurt won't be enough to support your body especially if you're training hard… Your brain uses 1/5 of the bodies energy (say 500 calories), you burn another 500-700 with an intense workout and within your day to day you will use just as much energy. So the celery sticks and almond butter you think are helping you lose fat make up a very small fraction of what your body needs! Often you will feel tired, lethargic and constantly sore from training. Plus when you have a slip up your body will store that treat as fat to survive because it feels starved :(
3. You eat something you're allergic to without knowing!
-We all have different food tolerances based on a number of variables. One way to stress your body and cause inflammation (common symptom, fluid retention) is eating something that doesn't agree with your body. Common but overlooked food intolerances include dairy, gluten, corn, soy, whey, egg whites, eggs, wheat and grain products.
4. You stress to much!
-Biologically in this day and age we are roughly 100x more stressed than our Grandparents (50 years ago). A hormone essential for human survival cortisol has many benefits in the body but when chronically elevated it leads to fat storage, typically around the lower part of the belly. Stress is a major reason most people gain weight or can't lose those stubborn kilos.
5. You don't eat enough protein!
Want to feel full? Want to build lean muscle? Want to boost your metabolism? Want to burn more calories at rest? Focus on eating more protein!
6. You don't consume enough vegetables!
Vitamins and minerals from vegetables play a large role in so many of our bodies processes. Fibre from vegetables also plays a crucial part in blood sugar control, appetite management and digestion which are all important for losing fat.
7. You're eating out to much!
Yes eating out provides a good platform for socialisation and a well deserved delicious meal from time to time is great! I'm not against that, BUT if you find it becoming a daily habit you may not be sticking to your fat loss plan. When you buy food from a restaurant or on the GO it's designed to taste good… Loaded with additives, extra calories and processing which fail in comparison to home prepared healthy meals for fat loss.
8. You're not drinking enough water!
Purchase a water bottle and keep it close by. This fundamental fat loss habit plays a big role in leaning out. Your liver has a hard time oxidising fat if you’re poorly hydrated! Drink up people!
9. You're not being strict enough!
If you follow my 80/20 rule you should be able to maintain a healthy balance between eating the things you enjoy and reaching your fat loss goals. BUT when that 20% of
"life's short enjoy the food and drinks you love"
creeps into those daily habits you break what is ultimately the most important key for sustainable fat loss... CONSISTENCY. You eat well all week BUT then the weekend comes and you have a complete blowout... This is like spending your week's hard earned paycheque in vegas over the weekend, then ending up with nothing on Monday. To build health EQUITY you need to be consistent and make frequent deposits. If you're in what I call "health DEBT" you will require steady payments of quality food and exercise to reach the positive!
10. You don't have a goal!
You need an end result, it's too easy to eat something bad, skip training or say "theres always tomorrow" without a goal, accountability or consequence. An exciting goal means an exciting future, plan a compelling out come that you can work towards each and every day!
