3 REASONS YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON MOBILITY!
"My knees feel better!"
"My back doesn't ache in the mornings"
"I used to have an awful click and grind in my shoulder"
-Many of my clients
If you're reading this post you care about improving your health, feeling good and avoiding injury. Wether you are new to the gym or have lifted for 15 years, a key role in quality of life is mobility.
Mobility is a tough sell that's probably why the first part of this post sounded like a lame infomercial, but for me and my clients it plays a big part in training success.
"ALL YOU NEED IS A 10 MINUTES A DAY TO GAIN THE PAIN FREE BODY OF YOUR DREAMS"
-If Vinnie from slap chop did an infomercial on mobility
All joking aside, here's a common question I get asked
“Hey Ian what’s mobility? Is that stretching? Cause I can touch my toes easy!”
Well flexibility is achieving a position with external aid or gravity… Think of a simple hamstring stretch, you’re pulling on your foot so you can feel a stretch in the back of your leg.
Next think about mobility as a voluntary self-reliant movement through a range of motion. Imagine standing, then raising your leg as high as possible!
“Hmmm, It's starting to make sense”
Hopefully these photos will provide some clarity!
“Hmm I think I get it, so one requires movement and the other does not?”
So here are 3 simple reasons to mobilise today!
REASON NUMBER 1:
There’s no worse feeling than sidelining yourself because of an injury that could have been prevented. Spending time away from the gym is a momentum killer when it comes to hitting your goals.
REASON NUMBER 2:
Avoiding chronic pain…
I would wake up stiff, achy and have sore shoulders before I had a mobility practice. Nothing drains energy like a tight body, not to mention the negative impact sitting has on our health.
Most of us spend time glued to a chair which has a huge burden on the neck and low back! We need to spend time undoing this dis-service to our bodies.
REASON NUMBER 3:
It makes me laugh when people promote functional fitness, to me this simply means making your body function better.
For example, A swimmer has mobility restrictions in the shoulder. Knowing that mobility and endurance overlap on a performance curve I take action to free up their shoulder.
Stop throwing sandbags but rather work on your posture, breathing, joint health and quality of movement to get more “Functional”.
“Hey Ian that was a bit aggressive towards the end! What if I like throwing sandbags?”
It’s simple, mobility is a force multiplier when it comes to getting performance results… Applying a better working body to any sport, exercise program, salsa dancing or what ever you prefer will only make it better!
Don’t worry, Im going to post some simple 5 minute routines you can do at home for the back, shoulders, hips and more so hang tight!
